Paneer Tikka Masala Recipe

Paneer Tikka Masala is a popular Indian dish made with marinated paneer (Indian cottage cheese) cooked in a creamy and flavorful tomato-based gravy. Here’s a recipe to make Paneer Tikka Masala:

Paneer tikka masala is a delicious and popular Indian dish that combines the rich flavors of paneer (a type of Indian cottage cheese) with a flavorful and aromatic tomato-based gravy. It is a vegetarian alternative to the classic chicken tikka masala and has gained immense popularity not only in India but also in various parts of the world.

To make paneer tikka masala, the process typically involves two main steps: marinating and grilling the paneer cubes, and preparing the tomato-based gravy. Let’s delve into each step in detail.

The first step involves marinating the paneer. Cubes of paneer are marinated in a mixture of yogurt and various spices such as red chili powder, turmeric, cumin, coriander, garam masala, and ginger-garlic paste. The yogurt helps tenderize the paneer and infuse it with the flavors of the spices. The marinated paneer is then typically left to rest for at least 30 minutes or refrigerated for a few hours to allow the flavors to develop.

After marinating, the paneer cubes are usually skewered and grilled. Traditionally, this is done in a tandoor (a traditional clay oven), but it can also be accomplished using a grill or oven. Grilling the paneer not only imparts a smoky flavor but also gives it a slightly charred and crispy texture. The grilled paneer cubes are then set aside while the gravy is prepared.

For the tomato-based gravy, a combination of onions, garlic, and ginger is sautéed in oil or ghee until they turn golden brown and fragrant. Then, a blend of tomatoes and spices such as turmeric, red chili powder, garam masala, and kasuri methi (dried fenugreek leaves) is added. The mixture is cooked until the tomatoes soften and release their juices, resulting in a thick and flavorful gravy. Some variations may also include the addition of cashew paste or cream to enhance the richness and creaminess of the gravy.

Once the gravy is prepared, the grilled paneer cubes are gently added to it. They are allowed to simmer in the gravy for a few minutes to absorb the flavors. This step helps the paneer to become more tender and also allows the spices to meld together. Finally, the dish is garnished with fresh coriander leaves and a drizzle of cream for added visual appeal and richness.

Paneer tikka masala is typically served hot with naan (Indian bread), roti (Indian flatbread), or steamed rice. It is a delightful combination of spicy, tangy, and creamy flavors that is loved by vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. The paneer’s soft and creamy texture pairs perfectly with the robust tomato gravy, creating a satisfying and mouthwatering dish.

Paneer tikka masala is a testament to the rich culinary heritage of India and its ability to create diverse and flavorful vegetarian dishes. Whether enjoyed at home or in Indian restaurants around the world, it continues to be a favorite choice for those seeking a delightful and satisfying vegetarian meal.

1/2 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 cup heavy cream
Salt to taste
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

In a bowl, whisk together yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala, lemon juice, and salt to make a marinade.

Add the paneer cubes, bell pepper, and onion to the marinade. Gently toss to coat the paneer and vegetables evenly. Allow it to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Thread the marinated paneer, bell pepper, and onion onto skewers. Place the skewers on a baking sheet and brush them with oil.
